FINAL WORDS OF WISDOM

As a final word of wisdom, go back to chapter 1 and make sure that you understand all the topics and have the notes of the fretboard, completely memorized. In the chapter on Church modes (2), memorize each of the seven modes. Also memorize the major, minor and one diminished chord and arpeggio forms for each mode. From there you can build other chords, arpeggios, scales and so on.

Learn as many chords and arpeggio formulas as you can. There are many different ways, to play any given chord or arpeggio. Therefore memorize the formulas, instead of the actual chord or arpeggio. This way you won't need to memorize tens of thousand of finger patterns, only a small amount of formulas. You'll soon be able to calculate many different ways to apply them. Do the same thing with the common and exotic scales. Learn the formula first.

Learn and master a large amount of approaches. This will make your sound very interesting and stylish. All the great musicians play many different approaches.

Practice writing songs on a regular basis. This will show you and your friends, that you are improving. Your songs will be simple at first, but eventually they will be more complex and pleasant to listen to and play.

Get a book or take a class on reading music. Any one that can read music fluently, definitely puts themselves at a higher level of musical understanding.

Practice listening to everything that you play. Make sure that every note that you play, sounds clean. Play everything very slow at first, until the sound quality is good. Listen closely to what you are playing. Soon you'll be able to identify the chords, arpeggios, scales and approaches by name, using only your ear. Being able to identify notes by ear is perhaps the final frontier in music theory. Work hard on this subject. Playing by ear is an invaluable talent, that anyone can achieve.

Finally, understand that these are just the basics. It is up to you use these tools and to expand to other areas. Practice hard and often. In time, perhaps sooner than you think, you'll be playing like a pro.
