Start with a relatively cheap one for your first one. That way you're not wasting money if you don't get the hang of it, or decide not to play after all. Any local music shop should have 'starter kits' that have like a Fender Squire bass and an amp and strap, cord etc. I bought my first bass for $300 and got Mel Bay Beginner Bass book and learned from that (and playing to Rush records). Once I had learned and played for awhile, then I was willing to invest in a better bass. In my case it was a Rickenbacker, and now I have 4 basses altogether with the last one a custom made $2500 bass. Don't get freaked out about cost right now. You just need something that makes noise to see if you're really interested or not.
