Re: Dobro

Re: How to hold a guitar?

From: why the left leg ...

Comments

Yes, what you have seen is correct. The guitar goes on the left leg. You should have something under yur left foot to said it up about 4-5 inches. The guitar whousl be placed close to your body, with the next at roughtly a 45 degree angle to the floor. The fist few frets should be pointing at your nose. While this may feel uncomfortable, it will help you to develop your technique. Your thumb should rarely, if ever, extend more than halfway across the back of the neck. Bend at the wrist, not at the knuckles. You can reach further that way. Once you have advanced, and your left hand has developed a wider reach, you can think about trying some other ways of holding the guitar. Hendrix could play it behind his head. That doesn't mean that is what you should do when you are trying to learn. Enjoy!

The squareneck Dobro is played lying in your lap and is fretted with a steel bar the Roundneck has a smaller neck and is fretted with the fingers. Go to folkofthewood.com for more information. Good luck.
