Yes. The key of the song will decide what scale is played and the notes that can and can't be played. i.e. If the key is G major, then the scale is G major, G, A, B, C, D, E, F#, G. All of the chords used in the song will be made up of the notes in the G major scale. If there is an A chord used in the song it will most likely be an Am chord because there is no C# in the scale of G major. The three notes of an A major chord are; A, C#, E. The same would be so for an E chord if there was one. The three notes that make up an E major chord are; E, G#, B and since there is no G# note in the scale of G major, you would have to flat the third note making it an Em. Coincidentally, when a solo or improvisation is played, it to will be made up of the notes found in the G major scale. In each chord change of the song, play the notes that are relative to BOTH the G major scale AND the scale of the chord that was changed to during the solo/improvisation.
