I don't know when you posted this so maybe it's late but I am a certified luthier. I did a bunch of work on a Johnson acoustic as a charity case and did a level, crown, and polish on the frets (it had been very abused; I had to replace three frets), made a bone nut and saddle for it and did a proper set up and it turned out to be a fine sounding and playing instrument. Stock? I don't know but a bad box won't respond well to the work I did and this one was impressive. As with any production acoustic, I recommend putting your hands on the one you actually intend to buy and play it. Check the set up and allow for it to be off and if it sounds good, then buy it. Custom work similar to what I did will only make it better. What you are really looking for is a 'live' box-put your hand lightly on the top or even the back-does it vibrate to the other noises in the store? For the most part, more vibration means more sensitivity and that is a good thing in an acoustic guitar. Even a cheap guitar with a live box can be made to sound even better. Next is a fret board you like and the next thing I look for on a cheap guitar is how bad are the tuners-that is where a lot of companies save money-cheap as in low quality tuners. A cheap guitar that has a live box and a fret board/neck feel you like is worth a set of Grovers; they're pretty cheap. Hope this all helps without swamping you. Good luck.
