In terms of keeping in tune, i presume you mean playing without hitting dud notes. I did this for a long time after I started, as i had no previous musical experiance, and didnt realise that you can play any notes in a scale in sequence, and they work well...
The best thing to do is learn the major scales, then learn some variations of them (such as minor scales, and scales in different modes, such a ionian or mixymelodian), and get together with some others, and play together. Not only will it make it sound better as you learn, but also will make it a lot more fun!
