The basics of reading guitar tablature is truly very basic. The horizontal lines represent the strings on the guitar (from the low E string up to the high E string) and the number are the frets in which you place your fingers. The reason you don't see tablature in school is because it is not a proper way to read music. There are certain things in music notation that are missing in tablature, most importantly, note time values. Tablature is much easier to learn than standard notation and is slowly evolving to include some of those missing elements (such as time values), this newly evolved tablature is called super tab and will probably be able replace the need for guitar notation.
