Re: writing solos

When writing a solo for a song, you must first determine which key it is in.After you determine that the next step is to find the scale in which you want to play it in. For instance, if I was writng a solo to a song in E major, I would first use a major scale. Then I would find the mode in which I would want to play it in. Of course I would try it in E major(E,F#,G#,A,B,Db,D). Then if I wasnt happy with that, I would try using other modes.E lydian major(E,F,G,A,A#,C,D), or even E mixolydian"7th scale"(E,F#,G#,A,B,Db,D).Those are all great choices, but,you are not limited to the major scale. There are many scales to chose from, but, most music today uses either major(diatonic, or 7 note scale), or pentatonic(5 note scale). Also you are not just limited to play just them notes. In my soloing, I also borrow notes from other scales. This is tricky, but, you just have to know the positioning of the scales so once you borrow the notes, you can go back to the scale that you were playing in.
