Reading guitar tablature for a scale...

This is an A Major Scale

 E |-----------------------------------5----------------|

 E |--5-7-9---------------------------------------------|

In all guitar tablature the horizontal lines represent the six strings of the guitar (the bottom one in the fattest E string).

The numbers represent the frets that you place your finger on to play when you pluck that string.

In this case the first note that you play is the 5th fret on the low E string (an A note).

Then you let go of that note and play the next one which is the 7th fret note on the same low E string (this note is B).

After playing that note let go of it and move to the next note (low E string 9th fret)

The example continues then on to the next string (A string) by playing the 5th. fret.

Continue this way one note at a time until you finish by playing the last note (5th fret on the high E string).
