There are several reasons why the guitar may seem difficult to play and seemingly impossible to master. One is, like all things worth while in life, mastery takes time, patience and practice. Very few people have the desire and or ability to spend the many hours that it takes, just to get to a point to where the fingers can play anything worth while on the guitar. The guitar takes strength and dexterity in a way that is, at first, alien to the fingers. Unlike the piano, (which may seem easy in comparison), the guitar is laid out in a way that is not linear. The scales not only go up and down the neck but also across the fret board and many of the note repeat themselves in several locations. Also unlike the piano, each hand has to work in a different way, one hand has to push down on the string while the other hand has to pluck the strings accurately and at the same time. In addition, not being able to look at both hands at once, can make it very hard for beginners to keep track at what is going on. Besides the bagpipes, the guitar has been called the most difficult instrument to learn.
