Re: whats the difference between a 12 string and a normal guitar???

From: 12 String Guitar Player

Comments

A twelve string guitar is the same as a 6 string guitar except it as twice as many strings (two of each).  Each string has a partner string next to it.  This gives the guitar a doubling sound when played.  Some of the secondary strings are tuned the same as their twin counterpart and some of the strings are tuned an octave higher than their partner string.

The lowest pair of strings consists of a small E string which is tuned an octave higher and normal big E string, like the one that is on a 6 string guitar.

The second pair of strings has a small A string tuned a octave higher and a normal big A string like the one on a 6 string guitar.

The third set of strings contain a smaller D string tuned a octave higher and a normal big D string.

The forth pair of strings are a smaller G string tuned an octave higher and a big G string is tuned like a 6 string guitar.

The fifth set of strings are 2 small B strings tuned identically, just like a 6 string guitars B string.

The sixth set of strings are both high E strings tuned the same, similar to the E string on a 6 string guitar.

Here are the notes written out starting from low to high: E2 E A2 A D2 D G2 G B B E E.

Note: It is very common for a 12 string guitar to be tuned entirely a whole step lower, to prevent the body of the guitar from warping, due to the mass amount of tension, created by the six extra strings.
