Re: ideas for learning?

I don't think you can express yourself in an infinite way on the guitar if you don't ever learn at least the basic finger placements. Learn these and then you can branch off into your own findings easily and with great amount of room to expand with endless opportunities for imagination and creation. Memorize the basic guitar scales, modes, chords and arpeggios, then you'll have a basic foundation upon which you can build your best expressions. Sure, there are guitar players and band bands that don't know any theory, but still make millions. Most of these players will be stuck forever in there own limited sound and form of expression. Soon, all their songs sound the same and they fade away.

If you still don't want to learn some theory, you can always close your eyes and choose notes randomly until you find a cool riff that moves you. Keep practicing this until you have many passages that you like playing, then try to hook some of them together until you have a song. Great bands have built off this and it is okay. However, I bet that if you break down all the songs that sound good, chances are they just happen to follow some basic music theory. If you don't mind learning some theory, but you seem to get lost everytime that you study it, try www.howtoplaymusic.com. or get a basic music theory book, or take a class at a college. If you go to a music store to take lessons, make sure to choose someone that will teach actual theory, not just a bunch of chords or bands riffs. Remember, desire rules!
