ideas for learning?

Im 16 years old, i have played guitar for about a year, but after quitting the lessons i was taking and then gradually losing interest, i haven't played much to be perfectly honest. I can memorize tabs and move my fingers fast but i know nothing about music.
recently a good friend of mine (who rules at guitar) inspired me to become much more serious about my playing. he taught me a little about scales and music theory... but only just enough to get me extremely interested AND still leave me hanging, aching to learn and understand more. CAN ANYONE suggest a good place to start learning? i dotn mean a place to get lessons, i mean where should i begin learning? which scales are the best to learn first? which chords should i study to become more comfortable with my guitar? I want to be able to play guitar, not memorize finger placement. i simply wish to learn everything i need to know to be able to express myself. thanks for any help you are willing to give!
