From: Guitar: Practice Makes Perfect, Teaching Makes Masters - kdm
How long will it take to master the guitar? That is a tough question, because it will be different for each person. You could take two people and have them both practice the same things, for the same amount of time and one will always end up able to play guitar better than the other. I guess it depends on a mix of a persons ability and desire to learn. Some people however, never learn guitar theory, but they seem to play very well. While others, that have had years of lessons, seem to struggle along. It hardly seems fair. There is also a difference between a person who plays other peoples music, compared to a person who writes and plays there own music.
Me personally ( I am very much average), I could play a few simple songs after about a year of messing around with the guitar, I could write my own primitive songs after about two years, but it took me about 4-5 years to say I was good enough (good timing, good tone, etc.) to play rhythm guitar in a band and 6-7 years to be a lead / solo guitarists and another year or so before I could be good enough to be recorded (note: It takes a least a year or two playing in a band to be good enough to record with a band). Becoming a master on the guitar also depends on the TYPE of music and if you are the rhythm guitarist or lead guitarist (lead guitar is harder). For example, I knew a guy that after two years picking up a guitar for the first time, he was playing rhythm guitar in a lounge act at a casino, doing simple country songs.
What I like to tell people is, that it will take forever to master the guitar, because no matter how much you know and how good you are, there is always more to learn and experience. I also tell people if you really want to learn and be good at guitar, learn guitar theory and learn to read notation (or at least tablature). And the number one way to get good, is it to TEACH other people how to play guitar, it forces you to learn, so that you can continue to keep teaching...
GOOD IDEA: In just one year, you can learn all the basics chords, scales and arpeggios, over the entire fretboard in every key by using the Daily Guitar Lessons routines found on the front of this web site.
