Hello. Most people seem to start out on acoustic guitars for the simple reason that they can be a much less expensive option. For an electric guitar, you need an amplifier and cables and such. For an acoustic, you need none of this extra equipment. Classical guitars are very nice for a beginner because the strings hurt less on the fingers of the new guitarist. And classical guitars sound very nice. However, if the person plans on playing with a pick or plectrum of some type, a classical guitar may not be suitable....a person should really only play fingerstyle on a classical guitar. In conclusion, I wouldn't get an electric guitar at first unless that is just what the person wants. I would get a classical or steel-stringed acoustic, depending on whether the person is wanting to learn fingerstyle or flat-picking. Hope this helps!
